Ancient Christian Church Discovered in Syria

In an ancient trading city 150 miles northeast of Damascus in Syria, a Syrian-Polish archaeological team has discovered an 8th-century Christian church. The new discovery is the fourth, and largest, church to be found in Palmyra, the ancient center of the Arab state that was under Roman rule for centuries.

In southeastern Turkey, a monument had been discovered form the 8th century B.C. that archaeologists say provides the first written evidence that people of the region held the religious concept of the soul apart from the body.

The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. is presenting their latest exhibit from the ancient world: Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture Around the Bay of Naples. The exhibition addresses the influence of classical Greece on the rich artistic and cultural life in these cities, as well as the influence that their 18th-century rediscovery had on the art and culture of the modern world. Approximately 150 extraordinary artifacts that comprise the exhibit represent the skill of the ancient craftsman and the sophisticated taste of the first century elite in the Roman world. Among the objects on display will be priceless works of sculpture, paintings, mosaics and luxury items—some of which have never before been seen in the U.S.
